Medicare Safety Net
The Medicare Safety Net helps reduce out-of-pocket medical costs for individuals and families who have higher healthcare expenses during a calendar year (1 January to 31 December).
Once your eligible out-of-pocket costs reach a set threshold, Medicare pays a higher benefit for the rest of the year.

How the Medicare Safety Net Works

-
You pay for medical services as usual
-
Medicare tracks your out-of-pocket costs (the gap between the Medicare rebate and the doctor’s fee)
-
Once the threshold is reached, you receive higher Medicare rebates for eligible services for the remainder of the year

The Two Medicare Safety Nets

Original Medicare Safety Net
-
Applies automatically to everyone
-
Once reached, Medicare pays 100% of the Medicare Schedule Fee for eligible services (instead of 85%)

Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN)
-
Designed to help patients with higher ongoing costs
-
After reaching the threshold, Medicare pays 80% of your out-of-pocket costs for eligible services
-
Annual caps apply to some Medicare item numbers
Threshold amounts vary depending on:
-
Concession card status
-
Family Tax Benefit A eligibility
-
Whether you are registered as an individual or family

Families and Couples
-
Families and couples can register as a family with Medicare
-
Medical costs then count toward one combined Safety Net threshold
-
Once reached, all registered family members benefit for the rest of the year

Important Things to Know
-
Only out-of-hospital Medicare-eligible services are included
-
Some services have payment caps under the Extended Safety Net
-
Safety Net thresholds reset on 1 January each year
-
Families must be registered for costs to be combined

Why the Medicare Safety Net Matters
The Medicare Safety Net can significantly reduce out-of-pocket expenses for patients who require regular GP care, home visits, specialist appointments, or ongoing medical management.
